CLAIRE WINELAND's BIOGRAPHY

CLAIRE WINELAND
Activist & Author

Claire Wineland is a young activist of CF ( Cystic Fibrosis ), an author, and the founder of Claire's Place Foundation. She was born on April 10th, 1997 in Austin, Texas, the U.S. So she has a small family. Her mother's name is Melissa Nordquist, her father is John Wineland, and she has a little sister, and her name is Elanore Nordquist. She grew up in a broken family as her parents got separated when she was 3 years old, but her parents always came together in her care.

So she had a disease called Cystic Fibrosis which is a deadly genetic disease that causes an overload of mucus to accumulate in the body, which traps infections and blocks airways in the lungs. She had it since she was born, and it slowly causes her organs to malfunction and fail.

When she turned 13, she had a routine surgery that led to a blood infection that caused lung failure after which she was placed in a medically-induced coma. Though there was only a 1% chance of her survival, she miraculously came out of it after 16 days. Her motivation to stay alive was she wanted to give something to the world and wanted to help other people. Her survival inspired her to start "Claire’s Place Foundation," a non-profit organization to help the people affected by terminal illness, specifically cystic fibrosis.

She'd work on a book, it is called "Every Breathe I Take", it is about surviving life from Cystic Fibrosis.
At a TEDx talk, Claire made a point of saying how cystic fibrosis helped give her a quality of life.
"Life isn't just about being happy. ... It's not about how you feel second to second," she said. "It's about what you're making of your life and whether you can find a deep pride in who you are and what you've given."

She has got 4 rewards in her life. In 2014, she got a Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes, and Los Angeles Business Journal's Small Nonprofit of the Year Award. In 2015, She got a Fox Teen Choice Award Honoree. And in 2016, She listed as one of Seventeen magazine's 17 Power Teens.
So She had already been evaluated 3 times to the lung transplant, but 2 of it was refused by her. And her lung function was decreasing by 10% per year, in 2017 it was 35%, and in 2018 it was 25%-28%. And then she wanted a lung transplant but not because she only wanted to be healthy, she said " I'm not getting these lungs just to be healthy, I don't care about that. I'm getting these lungs so that I can do something for everyone, so I can give something that the world needs."

After a few days after that, she had a lung transplant. The nine-hour surgery went well, and her mother reported that the lungs were working great. But not long after the successful surgery, hope turned to fear. Claire suffered a stroke when a blood clot cut off blood flow to the right side of her brain. She never emerged from her medically induced coma. Despite emergency surgeries, and what her mother described as "Herculean efforts" to try to save her, the daughter she knew was gone. Given the severity of the stroke and Claire's advance directive, it became clear that it was time to let her go. She passed away peacefully on September 2nd, 2018 ( she was 21 years old ), with her parents by her side.

Claire Wineland, a young activist, she gave so many changes to the world, many of her fans said that after they watched her video on her youtube channel, they get inspired by her, they mindset of disability changed, she gave other people hope for surviving CF, she changes their life, and she helped people from tried to commit suicide.

Question!
1. How can she end up live in a broken family?
2. What did Claire make after she survives from a medically-induced coma when she was 13 years old?
3. How many awards did she get?
4. What is the text talks about?
5. How could she die at such a young age?

RIP. Claire Wineland

"The quality of your life isn't determined by whether You're healthy or sick, or rich or poor. It's determined by what You make out of your experience as a human being."
